Cerakote FAQ

What is Cerakote?

Cerakote is a thin-film ceramic polymer coating that provides excellent durability, hardness, scratch resistance, flexibility, and chemical resistance. It can be applied to metal, plastic, and even wood. While not quite as scratch and impact resistant as some other treatments, such as anodizing or nitride, it surpasses them all in corrosion protection. Best of all, with over 200 colors to choose from, and limitless design possibilities, it's by far the most versatile.

What does the service cost?

For single color jobs, handguns start at $200, shotguns/bolt-actions $250, and AR-style rifles $300. Additional colors are $50 each, and there is an additional cost for camo and stencil work. These prices do not include disassembly and reassembly, which vary depending on the particular firearm. All prices will be clearly detailed before any work is performed.

What are your lead times?

Depending on current workloads, lead times can be anywhere from 3 to 8 weeks from the time we receive the item, although we do our best to get your item done as quickly as possible without sacrificing quality.

How do I get my firearm to you?

You can ship the firearm directly to us, or you can make an appointment to drop it off. If you ship it, the firearm will be shipped directly back to the address you sent it from once completed. If you drop it off, you must also pick it up in person. If someone other than the individual listed on the order picks up the firearm, an ATF Form 4473 must be filled out and a background check performed (for a fee of $40), so it's best to pick it up yourself.

Instructions for shipping a firearm:

  1. Unload and remove ALL ammunition!
  2. Securely package the firearm in a new, sturdy corrugated cardboard box. Do not indicate anywhere on the box that it contains a firearm.
  3. Select a shipper:
    1. USPS
      1. Will only ship long guns -- no handguns.
    2. UPS
      1. Will ship long guns or handguns.
      2. If sending a handgun, you must ship via Next Day Air only.
      3. Must be scheduled for pickup or dropped off at a UPS Service Center. You cannot drop it off at a UPS Store.
    3. FedEx
      1. Will not accept firearms from non-FFLs at this time.
Do I need to disassemble my gun?

No. We have trained gunsmiths on staff who can fully disassemble, reassemble, and test your firearm. There is a charge for this, however, so if you're competent, you can save money by disassembling it yourself. Keep in mind that they must be FULLY disassembled, which means every spring, screw, pin, etc. must be removed. If you do disassemble yourself, please only send the parts you want to be coated, and include a list of everything included in the package. Please note, also, that we will not reassemble or test a firearm that has been sent to us disassembled.
